Roll up those sleeves and get ready to indulge in some fabulous finger-lickin’ wings! This month we bring you several great chicken wing recipes that are perfect for a back-yard barbecue appetizer. Chicken wings are a great first course simply because they taste great, are simple to prepare and are quick on the grill. You can either purchase the wings already cut or you can do it yourself.
Trimming them yourself is quite simple – just remove the tip and then cut the remaining piece between the joint to result in two pieces. I purchase the wings in large “family” packs and then just divide them up into smaller packs and freeze the portions I am not going to use immediately. This makes for a very cost-effective appetizer.
Basic tips for grilling wings:
Marinate the wings for at least 4 hours or overnight.
- Lightly oil the grill rack. Preheat the grill to medium high.
- When the grill is hot, place the wings on the grill.
- Grill the wings 12-16 minutes, turning frequently.
- When the wings have about 5 minutes remaining, baste the wings with your marinade (if using) – especially if you are using a marinade containing sugar. If the marinade has sugar in it and you baste too early you will most likely find that the sugar will burn and your wings will appear burnt.
I have also found that grilled chicken wings make a great lighter dinner option. My kids love the smaller portions and think the little wings are fun and easy to eat. For a dinner course serve the wings with a nice salad and some roasted potatoes for a balanced and easy dinner.
