ABC’s of Fitness

There is an effective way to add variety to your workout.  Just use the alphabet!  The idea is to draw imaginary, life-sized letters of the alphabet, using a ball that is held out in front.  A little music, some repetition, and you’ve got a new component to add to your bag of fitness options.

Start with arms extended, holding the ball with both hands. Keep abdominal muscles tucked. (Think belly button bolted to spine.)  Head should stay in line with the spine.  As you move through the letters, bend from the waist with knees relaxed. Avoid curving the spine or rounding the shoulders.  Keep movements slow and rhythmic.  At the end of the alphabet, start over. Add a little variety by alternating between capital, lower case letters, and script.

As with any new form of exercise, be sure to start conservatively and work up to more repetitions as you adjust to the workout.  The rewards of applying the alphabet in this way include:  improved cardio vascular conditioning, overall muscle toning, flexibility, and strength.
