I often pass people who are walking on the
parkway near my home. They might be alone, dog-walking, or
accompanied by a friend. The thing that strikes me is the
simplicity of their workouts. Good music, conversation with
a friend, or time with a treasured pet are great accompaniments
to an enduring fitness program.
Here are some tips for staying with your
fitness program in the upcoming winter months:
- Get outside as much as possible on
the days the weather is good.
- Find a buddy to share your workouts.
Youll help motivate each other and be less likely
to skip a session.
- On days you dont feel like
working out, commit yourself to doing at least a minimal
effort and just get moving. You might find youll perk
up and do more than you planned.
- On busy days when you dont
have time to squeeze in a workout, make a point of parking
farther away from your destinations. Try to stretch out
the time you spend walking your dog. Or slip in some squats
or leg lifts while youre waiting for something to
cook. Make a point to use the stairs instead of the elevator.
Run around outdoors with your kids for a few minutes.
The important thing is, find simple ways
to keep moving and youll find it much easier to get
in shape and stay in shape.
