As the first day of autumn rolls by, I’m thinking about how to keep my workouts going when cold weather hits and I have to move indoors to train. It’s so much easier to work out when you can walk outside with a friend, ride a bike, inline skate, or enjoy other outdoor pursuits. I can think of 50 reasons to put off my exercise session if I have to do it inside. Here are some ways to get started when you can’t face the drudgery and boredom of indoor exercise equipment: Even if you don’t feel like exercising, make an agreement with yourself to work out for at least five minutes. This is especially important if you workout at the end of the day, when energy can be especially low. Start slow and go easy. Once your muscles get warm, you’ll feel more like picking up the pace and completing the session. Try watching a movie while you pedal, stair-climb, or use other indoor equipment. The allotted exercise time doesn’t loom so large when you are distracted by a movie plot. Never underestimate the power of great music as a motivator. Tune in your favorite upbeat music to inspire your inner athlete. Invest in a couple of new workout DVD’s. Mix them up from day to day to keep the training session feeling fresh and interesting. Change it up. Insert variety into each indoor workout session. One day, use whatever equipment you may have. If you have more than one piece, switch back and forth during your session. Next day, use a cardio DVD or try yoga. This last tip may seem impossible at the start, but give it a try. If you miss your workouts because you are interrupted by family members, start carving out a time for your exercise session by delegating responsibility. Older children can be in charge of the younger ones during your exercise time. Hop on your exercise equipment while children are working on homework. Promise a small reward or treat when children entertain themselves during your workout. If you value the time you set aside, your kids will too. A little “me time” will make you feel better about yourself and your family time will feel much sweeter. -Pam Brooks
