As the weather turns cold, those of us who have enjoyed “outdorphins” during the good weather have to regroup to stay fit when the winter prohibits outdoor activities. Joining a gym is a great way to stay fit through the winter. When choosing a gym, it’s important to pick one that offers an atmosphere and staff that are in synch with your workout goals
The first thing to consider is your workout history. What has worked for you in the past? Are you motivated by a group? If so, you’ll want a gym that offers a variety of choices for classes and activities. Do you like to work out on your own? Quality of equipment might be more important. Need someone else to provide motivation? Check out the personal trainer options to ensure there is one that you can relate to. Don’t be afraid to ask for credentials.
What kind of workout atmosphere do you like? What is your budget? Clubs with state-of-the-art equipment and the hottest classes might be intimidating or higher priced than a more low-key setting.
Is the staff friendly and attentive? Is the gym clean? Do they offer a free pass or passes so you can sample their facility?
Beware the hard-sell approach by gym sales staff. If you pay by credit card, you might be able to enlist the help of your credit card company in case of a dispute.
If you’re new to an area or to a gym and don’t have a workout buddy, join classes or activities. It will help you meet other members who could turn into workout buddies. When one of you weakens in determination, the other may be able to lend you some motivation until your own kicks in.
Each gym has a different vibe. It takes a little investigation to find just the right one. If the gym you choose offers a variety of fitness activities, plenty of cardio equipment, even during peak hours, and has a welcoming atmosphere, chances are you’ll enjoy your workout sessions and stick with your fitness plan.
