Fast, Easy and Fabulous Holiday Decorating

One winter, I attended a cooking class, titled ‘New Year’s Eve Party’. I was expecting a buffet full of recipes that I probably wouldn’t be able to eat. With a few exceptions, my assumptions were correct. The chef prepared an incredible amount of food in just two hours. One way he was able to do this was to use processed food products to create his dishes. This of course left me out of the game as far as sampling his food or to being able to re-create it with gluten-free products. So what did I get out of this class? The best ideas I have ever seen on how to decorate a holiday or special occasion table in 15 minutes or less!

This is so easy and impressive when done, you won’t know why you didn’t think of it yourself!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Table cloth
  • An assortment of cardboard boxes in various sizes. All the sizes should fit in the middle of your table and be big enough to hold individual serving dishes comfortably. Choose squares, rectangles, a variety of shapes and sizes. Remove all the lids or top flaps.
  • A large piece of see-through, lightweight, ‘fancy’ fabric; silk, toole, lightweight satin, chiffon.
  • A strand or two of small, white Christmas lights
  • Optional: Two elegant candle sticks with candles, a flower arrangement in a large, beautiful vase.

To assemble:

  • Cover your table with the tablecloth.
  • Arrange the boxes, upside down, in the center of your table, next to and on top of each other. Example: place a smaller square box on top of a larger rectangle box. A medium size table can hold about 5 boxes.
  • Place the Christmas lights around the bottom of the boxes in a random pattern. Make sure the plug ends up in a place where you can conveniently plug it in.
  • Cover the boxes and lights with the fabric. Buy enough fabric so you can make folds and loosely cover the arrangement.
  • You can add candles or a flower arrangement at this point.
  • Plug in the lights.
  • When you are ready to serve, place the food on serving dishes on top of each box, creating a multi-level masterpiece!

Your family and friends will think you’re a genius, and at the very least, an avid reader of Martha Stewart.
