Green
rolling hills, a past inter-woven with many of the worlds
greatest artists and their masterpieces and a cuisine that
is known world wide, this is the heart of Tuscany. Tuscany
is a region located in the center of Italy and consists of
nine cities that wind throughout the countryside. Much has
been written about this culturally rich and beautiful region
and much has been borrowed from it, not least of which is
its cuisine.
Tuscan cooking consists largely of simple
straightforward ingredients prepared in a home-style manner.
A typical Tuscan meal is one prepared with whatever is fresh
and in the cupboard that day. Fresh tomatoes, peppers, herbs,
olive oil, lemon, cheeses, eggs, garlic, home raised meat
or poultry or seafood purchased daily at the local market
are all common in a typical Tuscan meal and always accompanied
with a loaf crusty bread. Simple and delicious and never exactly
the same, the ingredients are blended together uniquely by
each family who adds their own signature to each preparation.
We cant duplicate the crusty bread, but we can share
with you some wonderful Tuscan recipes that are naturally
gluten free.
The key ingredients to Tuscan cooking are
olive oil, garlic and fresh herbs, such as rosemary, basil,
tarragon, sage, thyme and bay leaves. Many Tuscan meals are
prepared with meat or pasta or eggs, cooked in olive oil with
a little garlic and fresh herbs added right before serving.
To this basic recipe, simply add a tomato sauce or cheese
and you have the essence of Tuscan cooking.
