Hard to believe we’re staring the 4th of July in the face already! Harder still to imagine it here in the Northwest where we’ve had a prolonged cool spring and very intermittent sunshine. But here it is.
Here on San Juan Island, the 4th of July brings the beloved annual 4th of July Parade down Spring Street. Our parade is reminiscent of so many small town celebrations across the country where practically anything that can move or be pulled can proudly take its place in the parade. Spring Street, the main street that begins at Friday Harbor water front and runs the length of our tiny town will soon be lined on both sides with most of Friday Harbor’s residents, young and old. Our parade is well attended, so most will arrive early to get the best spots to set up their folding chairs. Much goes into the preparation of this adorable event that only lasts about an hour.
After the parade, it’ll be time to eat!
Whether your 4th of July picnic means dining on a deck, a picnic the woods, on the beach or celebrating on a boat, it will probably involve food that is made at one location and transported to another; and usually served pot luck style. If you’re a guest at a 4th of July picnic, I suggest that you offer to bring an entrée and a dessert. Chances are that there will be salads, vegetable dishes and fruit plates that will be gluten-free, but entrees and desserts are more likely to not be gluten-free. Bringing them yourself will guarantee that you will have plenty to eat and your hostess will probably love you for it as well!
Throwing your own picnic:
If it’s your party you can serve all the typical picnic favorites gluten-free and none will be the wiser. To prove it I’d like to share a couple of 4th of July menus I plan to serve for my friends and family; one picnic style and one served a little more formally on my deck.
