Scrumptious
Strawberries
One
of the things I love most about this time of year is biting into
deliciously sweet strawberries. I remember even as a kid being
a sucker for strawberries. I would amaze my parents by eating
2 bowls of Strawberries with Anglefood Cake, without even batting
an eye. Even though we are nearly ending our strawberry season
I thought it worthy to honor this great berry while we still can.
Nothing
quite compares to the sweet flavor of a freshly picked strawberry.
Strawberries are quite simple and are usually at their best if
eaten fresh. Often with impromptu dinner guests, Ill just
prepare small bowls of fresh strawberries and vanilla ice cream
delicious
and extremely easy! Another variation of this quick dessert, in
honor of the 4th of July holiday, we are featuring
our Red,
White & Blue Sundae, (fresh strawberries over
gf vanilla ice cream, topped with a blueberry sauce).
If
your looking for a few different ways to enjoy strawberries try
Grilled
Fruit Kebabs. These are absolutely delicious and
make a nice ending to a barbecue. The strawberries really sweeten
up with the spice rub and take on a nice flavor of the rum marinade
and the grill. Serve by themselves on skewers or over gf vanilla
ice cream for a wonderful, tasty treat!
Of
course, we could not end strawberry season without Strawberry
Pie. Each bite bursts with the sweet berry flavor
contrasted by the flaky, buttery crust. This is unbelievably delicious
our guests said it was the best pie theyve ever had!
A
few helpful tips:
If at all possible, keep caps on berries until you are ready to
serve. This preserves the flavor and reduces exposure to spoilage.
If you are not going to use fresh strawberries for more than an
hour or two before serving, sprinkle with sugar, cover and refrigerate.
Strawberries freeze well. Youll find frozen strawberries
are great in smoothies and other cold, blended drinks.
