Gluten-Free Product Testing: Orgran Rice & Corn Pasta

Scores: (1-5, 5 being the best)

Taste rating
Unlike many rice pastas there is a taste and unlike many corn pastas the taste is not overwhelming but rather just right.

Texture rating
The texture was very good - similar to what you’d expect out from a wheat pasta and held up, along with the consistency, through various recipes and leftovers.

Storage rating
This pasta will store indefinitely like any dried pasta.

Availability rating
We purchased the pasta through Amazon in a case lot of 9. The full line of products can be purchased at Kitch-n-Kaffe, E-food Pantry, and Amazon. I wish this product was available locally but we go through so much of it that case lots make sense.

Overall Score (4.75) rating
We were pleasantly surprised to find a gluten free pasta that tasted good with a great consistency and texture that worked in every recipe we tested. This pasta has become a weekly part of the menu and a staple in our pantry.

Rice and Corn Pasta Ingredients: (Kosher): Rice 91.0%, Corn Meal 9.0%, Water Added

This month we tested Orgran Rice & Corn Pasta Spirals. According to the manufacturer this multi- award winning pasta from the Riso Mais collection is their number one product globally and there is good reason-it is superb pasta. The pasta is wheat-free, gluten-free, cholesterol free, GMO free, dairy free, egg free and yeast fee and made of two ingredients Rice and non GMO corn in a dedicated gluten free facility. The pasta cooks up to a perfect al dente in 8 minutes (watch the time closely)and rinses easily with warm running water with no sticky mess. Clean up was a breeze unlike many other pastas that leave a sticky residue. I was immediately reminded of hard wheat durum pasta. We splashed it with a bit of olive oil, stirred and served the spirals with a Puttanesca Sauce -no one knew that it wasn’t a wheat pasta. The next test was to see how it held up in a casserole or soup. We chose chili and the pasta came through with flying colors holding its shape and consistency perfectly.

The final test: leftovers The pasta reheated beautifully with no mush, maintaining its shape and consistency. An all around winner the tested package serves 4 .We had 3 people for dinner and plenty of leftovers for lunch . In addition to the spiral shape the rice and corn pasta is available as macaroni, fancy curls, tortelli, lasagna, spaghetti, and penne.
